Ten things that Heinlein taught me.

1) My high school education was inadequate. And, unless I worked hard to prevent it, my college education would also probably be inadequate.

2) Having a high IQ and formidable physical presence isn't enough...you also need pluck and courage. If you're missing one of these things...well, I just don't know, I don't think it's ever addressed in depth.

3) Women are just like men, but need a tidy ten minute emotional breakdown every once in a while. Unless they are the useless histrionic kind...a la Farnum's Freehold.

4) There is no need for me to translate any foreign language phrases with which I might sprinkle my dialog.

5) In fact, I need not explain any vocabulary no matter how archaic...unless it has to do with science, in which case, I can explain to my hearts content.

6) I should always carry a gun.

7) I should be fully trained with my gun, and not be afraid to use it if circumstances require. You know, like if someone is substantially rude. (I'm not making this up...re-read The Cat Who Walks Through Walls)

8) Sex if fun, and I should feel free to engage in it any time I'd like as long as everyone is consenting.

9) Futuristic gadgets are really quite simple once you really think 'em through.

10) Every situation can be handled with a liberal dose of pragmatism.

  • It's all true! Plus, clothes are optional under any circumstances except dinner time, sex is fun, and you can have it with ANYONE, even close relatives, and you need to speak, read, and write at least three languages fluently, or preferably five. Oh yeah, if you are not stunnigly attractive, you have to be grizzled, cynical, and difficult and preferably a veteran.

  • HA! You didn't catch it at all! Number seven isn't from The Cat Who Walks Through Walls at all! It was from Between Planets. It was a test, and YOU FAILED. Feel shame. :)
